Every film is a business, and every artist creates new legally recognized property (i.e. copyrights) with every creation. To that end, filmmakers need to have a working understanding of what copyrights are, how they work, and how contracts can be used to protect the parties to a transaction. This class takes those complex areas of law and breaks them down into easy-to-understand concepts, using simple “plain English.” Led by entertainment attorney Max Hass, the Legal Basics workshop will start with an explanation of the film-relevant aspects of copyright, move on to the fundamentals of contracts, and conclude with an overview of the common contracts used in the film and video industries. Attendees will be invited to ask questions throughout the presentation, and there will also be time at the end of the presentation for additional questions.
Max Hass is an entertainment attorney and musician who has taught workshops to musicians, artists, filmmakers, and other creators for nearly 10 years on the basics of copyright, contracts, and other important topics that artists need to know.
